Financial Literacy Committee
To facilitate the organization, implementation and management of APPEAL’s “financial literacy” workshops and resource bank. Financial literacy refers to teaching people to become proficient in the fundamentals of personal financial management, including credit, budgeting, banking, saving, home ownership, investing, and retirement planning, and also the principles of community financial and economic self-sufficiency, empowerment and prosperity, particularly as these principles relate to the plight of people of African descent, locally, nationally and globally.

Socio-Economic Analysis and Education Committee (SEAEC)
Chair: Abena Makini Niliwaambieni Owusu
To facilitate the organization, implementation and management of APPEAL’s “historical and cultural literacy” programs and resource bank, and to facilitate the organization, implementation and management of APPEAL’s Think Tank activities. Think Tank activities include analyzing and documenting APPEAL’s positions on various socio-economic issues affecting people of African descent, and serving as a hub for the exchange of progressive and Pan-Africanist thought on various topics and issues. The term “historical and cultural literacy” refers to teaching people to become proficient in the knowledge of the basics of world history and African/Black history and culture, and facilitating people’s progression from the basics to intermediate and advanced knowledge on various aspects of this vast history and culture in relation to past and present socio-economic conditions locally, nationally and globally.

About the Chair:
Ms. Owusu is an experienced professional educator and educational administrator. Her previous positions include serving as Principal of SunRise Academy, Academic Director at Kamit Institute for Magnificent Achievers (KIMA), and Assistant Principal at the Academy for Ideal Education. Currently, she is a member of the Council of Independent Black institutions (CIBI), the Akyemfohema (Female Education Minister) for the Ankobea Society, and a co-facilitator of Kindezi Kommunity Kids Educational Forum Committee. Mama Makini, as she is affectionately known by her students, is a no-nonsense educator who believes in empowering youth and young adults to be responsible, respectful self-advocates. She has conducted adolescent and adult rites of passage programs for over 20 years through her company, Amankwa Enterprises, Inc., and the Ankobea Society. Over the course of her educational and professional career, she has studied elementary education, psychology, and leadership. Ms. Owusu has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from The Catholic University of America.
Membership, Recruitment and Marketing Committee

To facilitate the organization, implementation and management of APPEAL’s efforts to inform and recruit prospective new members, prospective contributors to APPEAL and its credit union project, and prospective workshop participants; to manage APPEAL’s relationship and communications with its existing members; and to manage APPEAL’s public relations and media interactions.

Credit Union Planning Committee

To facilitate the organization, implementation and management of the work required for APPEAL to apply to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for a charter to establish a credit union (APPEAL Federal Credit Union), which includes development of a detailed business plan for the prospective credit union.

About the Chairs:
Mr. Green is a professional accountant with approximately 20 years of experience in the area of corporate financial accounting. In his employment with KPMG, one of the leading public accounting firms in the industry, he specialized in non-profit entities. He has been employed at Host Hotels and Resorts, Inc, a Fortune 500 hospitality real estate company, for 13 years, where he has served as a senior accountant responsible for an international portfolio of luxury hotels. He has also specialized in financial accounting and reporting in the areas of corporate and municipal bonds, senior notes, and convertible debt issuances, including several multi-currency credit facilities, mortgages, and derivatives, all totaling more than $5 billion. His experience also includes being an internal auditor for several hotels under Host, auditing hotel financial reporting and internal controls for SEC compliance under the Sarbanes Oxley Act. He is a founding partner at TARG Associates LLC, an accounting firm that specializes in accounting and tax services for small and developing for-profit and non-profit companies. Mr. Green has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Florida A&M University.
